Definition and Usage

The <dfn> tag r is an inlinhe element used to represent the defining instance of a term. This tag has an order of operations of sorts when it comes to usage The <dfn> tag represents the defining instance of a term in HTML. The defining instance is often the first use of a term in a document. The nearest parent of the <dfn> tag must also contain the definition/explanation for the term inside <dfn>. The HTML <dfn> element represents the defining instance of a term.

The paragraph, description list group, or section that the first instance of a specific dfn element appears in should also contain the definition of that term. The <dfn> tag surrounds the word/term being defined.

The exact value of the term being defined changes based on the following situations:

If the <dfn> tag has a title attribute, then that its definition is the value of that attribute.
If <dfn> has an <abbr> tag with a title attribute, then that its definition is the value of that attribute.
If <dfn> doesn't have either, the text inside its tags is the definition.
