Definition and Usage
The <textarea> tag defines a multi-line text input control. A text area can hold an unlimited number of characters, and the text renders in a fixed-width font (usually Courier). The size of a text area can be specified by the cols and rows attributes, or even better; through CSS' height and width properties. The HTML<textarea> element represents a multi-line plain-text editing control. The <textarea> element is used to create a text input area of unlimited length. By default, text in a <textarea> is rendered in a monospace or fixed-width font, and text areas are most often used within a parent <form> element.
The HTML <textarea> tag is used within a form to declare a textarea element - a control that allows the user to input text over multiple rows.
In HTML 5, the maxlength attribute enables you to specify a maximum length for your <textarea>element. This attribute was not supported in previous versions of HTML.
